BIS Assignment@ Praxis Business School : What is System Architecture ?
Once the Business information system class got over ,i rushed to my room to get my phone and call my friend as he had asked me earlier that once system architecture was covered in my course he would like to know more about it .So here i was calling him and discussing it with him.
Friend-what is system architecture???
Me-A System architecture is basically a model which describes or analyzes a computer system and also a method to build the architecture of a system. It gives the knowledge about meeting business needs so that the user can access it easily without any hassle. This model consist of a basic structure which helps in giving a clear picture of the whole computer system. This involves properties of various elements which is the part of the system and the relationship between them.It also explains the behaviour and helps the user in multiple views of the system. In Simple words Simple Architecture is a model that defines the structures, behaviour
and the various views of a system.
Friend -Can you tell me something about ERP ??
Me - ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning. It helps in managing the various functions and activities of an organization like finance, accounting, sales ,etc. Before explaining ERP I would like to tell you about the
types of system architecture.
The first being Single Tier Architecture - Here both the data and the application are on the same machine.
Two tier architecture - Here when a user creates a data it is seperated from the application and stored in the server. The data which is stored is a common data which can be used by any user who wants to access it.It is also known as client-server architecture. Here all the machines are connected together by a local area network which help them to exchange the data. There is a single copy of data in the server which helps in reducing inconsistency and it does not affect the speed of response.
Three tier architecture - In three tier, the application is put into business logic and presentation logic .The business logic is placed in a common location with the data and presentation logic is at the users side.As i mentioned earlier ERP is a good example of three tier structure some examples being SAP ,Oracle eBusiness suite.
Multi tier architecture - It is a client server architecture in which presentation ,application processing and data management functions are seperated.By dividing an application the user can have the option of modifying a specific layer instead of reworking the entire application.
Friend- But why do we need these tiers ??
Me- These tiers need to be differentiated according to access speed. For a single person one tier is enough .Small organizations prefer two tier while multi national companies use web browsers.
Friend - What do you mean by the terms LAN and WAN ?
Me- LAN interconnects computers in a limited area as opposed to the broad area covered by WAN using public or private network. Using LAN higher rate of transfer of data is possible as compared to WAN.
Friend-Thank you so much for remembering and enlightening me.
Me- Welcome it was my pleasure.
